TOEFL

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an international standardized English language proficiency test. Its purpose is to assess the proficiency of non-native English speakers.

TOEFL scores can be used to confirm English proficiency by applicants from non-English-speaking countries applying to universities in the United States, Europe, and Asia. They are also used in a number of other English-speaking and non-English-speaking countries for admission to universities with English as the language of instruction. Furthermore, TOEFL certificates are often required by employers at international companies if the position requires a high level of English proficiency.

The TOEFL tests English language proficiency in four areas: reading, speaking, listening, and writing.

How the exam is conducted:

The three-hour exam consists of four sections: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
There is a 10-minute break between the second and third sections. All tasks are completed on a computer using headphones and a microphone.

How the TOEFL iBT is Administered
  • Reading (54-72 minutes). This section consists of three to four reading passages (approximately 700 words long), with 10 questions for each. Typically, the material is from academic articles and university-level textbooks.
  • Listening (41-57 minutes). The test-taker listens to conversations about school or excerpts from university lectures and answers questions about them. Note-taking is permitted.
  • Speaking (17 minutes). Four tasks are required, which test both the ability to discuss everyday topics and the ability to comprehend and interpret academic lectures. You have 15-30 seconds to prepare each answer.
  • Writing (50 minutes). This section includes two tasks: a question based on reading material and an audio lecture excerpt, and an essay on a given topic.

The maximum TOEFL iBT score is 120. Prestigious universities typically set a minimum score of 100, but most consider a score of 80-90 or higher to be high.
The TOEFL iBT is completed entirely on a computer, including the Speaking section, making it suitable for students who are nervous and embarrassed when speaking with a stranger. You can retake the TOEFL as many times as you like. The minimum interval between attempts is just three days. Universities will only see the score you choose to submit.

Note

The TOEFL certificate is valid for two years from the date of exam completion.
After this period, the results are considered expired, and the exam must be retaken.
