The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online test developed by Duolingo to assess English proficiency.

The online test can be taken at any time on a computer in just one hour. A front-facing camera, microphone, and speakers are required, as well as a stable internet connection.

How the Duolingo English Test works
The exam consists of two parts.

A test (45 minutes) includes tasks on reading, listening, speaking, and vocabulary. The difficulty level is adjusted individually, depending on how well you complete the tasks.
Video and written work (10 minutes). You must answer questions in video format and a short essay.

The maximum score for the Duolingo English Test is 160. A score of 120 or higher is sufficient for admission to prestigious universities.

The Duolingo test gained particular popularity in 2020, when the IELTS and TOEFL exams, which students are accustomed to, became unavailable due to the pandemic. Students are attracted by the accessibility of the test: Duolingo is much less expensive than standard language exams and takes less time.

You can take the Duolingo English Test (DET) as many times as you like. The only requirement is no more than twice in 30 days. After completing the exam, you must wait for your results before registering for the next one.

The DET certificate is valid for two years. If you are not satisfied with your exam results, you can retake it within two weeks.
