Admission
International applicants to Harvard apply for the same academic criteria as U.S. citizens, but they must also demonstrate English language proficiency and financial means.
Admission to the undergraduate program requires a high school diploma or equivalent with exceptional academic achievement. The University does not set a minimum GPA, but in practice, applicants have grades significantly above average. Particular attention is given to academic achievement in core subjects such as mathematics, science, and humanities.
Proof of English proficiency is mandatory. TOEFL or IELTS scores are accepted. A minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100 or an IELTS score of 7.5–8.0 is recommended. Low scores significantly reduce chances of admission.

Standardized SAT or ACT tests are currently optional, but high scores can strengthen an application. Applicants may apply without taking these tests. One of the key elements of the admissions process is the essay package. Applicants must prepare a main motivational essay and additional written responses outlining their academic interests, life experiences, values, goals, and reasons for choosing Harvard University. Essays are considered a crucial factor in the admissions decision.
Letters of recommendation are also required. Typically, two recommendations are required from faculty members who taught relevant courses, as well as a recommendation from a school advisor or the school administration.

Financial assistance and grants
Harvard University provides financial aid to international students based on need. Nationality does not affect eligibility for a grant. The university analyzes the family's financial situation and determines the amount the student can afford to pay. The remaining tuition is fully covered by the university.
For low-income families, tuition, room, and board may be completely free. Financial aid is provided in the form of a grant and is non-repayable.

Cost of tuition
The total cost of tuition for a bachelor's degree program averages approximately $55,000 per year. Accounting for room and board, health insurance, and additional expenses can bring the total cost up to $80,000 per year.
